THE Regional Democratic Council of Region 8 (Potaro / Siparuni), supported by the business community, held its Mash Day parade at Mahdia on Saturday, an event agreed by all to be the biggest and the brightest ever seen there. Comprising seven costume bands and scores of followers, the Mash revellers started at Campbelltown Mahdia and then danced their way through the streets to music supplied by the Calistro Brothers Band and popular stereo.
The revellers also included a team from Region 9 (Upper Essequibo/Upper Takutu) who were however unable to display their costumes because of the breakdown of a vehicle along the route to Mahdia.
To the delight of a large group of spectators, they proceeded from Campbelltown through Seven Miles Mahdia down the plateau, into the valley and then back “upstairs” to the RDC Ground.
Many partied in uninhibited style until early Sunday morning.
The Mash programme Saturday marked the return of the Mash celebrations
to Mahdia after a period of five years, as observances had been moved from Kato to Monkey Mountain, to Paramakatoi, to Kopinang, to Kurukabara, that is from one main village within the region to another over the past four years.
Chairman of Region 8, Senor Bell, last Saturday said he was satisfied with the level of involvement of all sections of the community in the big celebrations at Mahdia and the Mash Day tramp through the community.
