Guyana draw Regional 4-Day match with Barbados

LEFT-ARM orthodox spinner Veerasammy Permaul was named the man-of-the-match as hosts Guyana and their opponents Barbados played to a tame draw at the end of the fourth day in their West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional four-day fourth round match at the Guyana National Stadium, yesterday.
Scores: Guyana 330 and 163-9, Barbados 202 and 87-4.
Needing to score 292 to win from 63 overs, Barbados got a positive start in their second innings when Dale Richards drove Christopher Barnwell through the covers with authority for four, before Rajendra Chandrika held a simple catch at backward square leg offered by Richards off Bess.
Kyle Hope (6) joined Brathwaite but did not last long, as he was bowled by Assad Fudadin who had replaced Barnwell at the Pavilion End, leaving Barbados on 25-2 as the burly Ryan Hinds (3) joined Brathwaite and like Hope, he did not last long as he went lbw to Barbados’ first innings tormentor Permaul whose 6-60 earned him the man-of-the-match award.
At tea, Barbados were 47-4, following the demise of Brathwaite who was caught at the wicket off Leon Johnson’s leg spin that was being used for the home team in the absence of Bishoo, on the stroke of the interval.
After tea, it was evident the bowling of Bishoo was missed, as Fudadin tried both Vishal and Gajanand Singh in his attempt to dislodge Kevin Stoute and Roston Chase who were unbeaten on 24 and 18, but his ploy was not effective, as the two stayed together until play was called off at 17:00 h, with Barbados on 87-4.
Earlier, Guyana started the day on 90-4 and an overall lead of 218, without the services of their leading wicket-taker in this year’s tournament, Devendra Bishoo, who left for India before the first ball was bowled for the day. They held an overall lead of 218 runs, with Royston Crandon on 15 and Vishal Singh 9. Crandon drove Stoute over mid off for four to raise the team’s 100 in the 49th over, before the bowler knocked back his off stump.
Vishal Singh was next to go, caught by Roston Chase at leg gully pulling at a short delivery from Pedro Collins for 14 without any addition to the score, which meant that the home team, who began the round on seven points – two below their opponents – were 111-6, a lead of 229 with three wickets in hand, following the unavailability of Bishoo.
Barnwell replaced Crandon and was joined by Christian (2) who did not last long, as he picked out Chase on the deep cover boundary off Collins at 117-7 and a lead of 245 and it took a Barnwell four off Stoute to carry Guyana’s overall lead past the 250 mark, before rain at 11:36 h forced the players off the field with Guyana 146-8 with Permaul on 19 and Bess 1.
Play resumed at 13:15 h and Bess showed he is no rabbit with the bat, when he struck Stoute over wide long on for six, while Permaul got two fours off Stoute, before picking out Stoute at extra cover off Hinds’ fourth delivery of his first over of the day, leaving Bess unbeaten on 12 and Barbados 292 to record a come-from-behind win off 63 overs, which they opted not to chase after losing four early wickets, including Hinds and Brathwaite.
