From the ERC

REPUBLIC DAY MESSAGE
AS Guyana observes its 41st Republic Anniversary, the Ethnic Relations Commission believes it’s a time for Guyanese to reflect on the journey travelled and the progress we have made as an independent nation.

Reflecting on the achievements we’ve had over the years, we should be reminded that we are a nation of six people and we are all living together, realizing our Nation’s Motto of One People, One Nation, One Destiny. The high level of tolerance and respect expressed even as we acknowledge differences is an indication that Guyana has matured significantly.

As Guyanese, we must also stop and reflect on the contributions made by our ancestors and our leaders which have contributed significantly to successes we now enjoy as an independent developing country. We must rid ourselves of any lingering prejudices and join in the celebrations of love and togetherness. Mashramani – celebration after hard work.

This Republic Day, we should recommit ourselves to national development, strengthening relationships and accelerating progress. Let’s stand out as proud Guyanese. It is evident that even at the grassroot levels, in the office, field and factory, Guyanese are working on improving race relations; the ERC applauds these efforts.

We salute our leaders at the political, religious, business and community levels, who have taken the initiative and are leading the charge in creating this new Guyana.

The ERC continues to call upon all Guyanese to appreciate the fact that we are a multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-ethnic society. We are a work in progress.

Let’s celebrate this year, but let our eyes be focused on what’s ahead – a dynamic future, a prosperous country, a cohesive society, a place we are all proud to call home.

Happy 41st Republic Anniversary to all Guyanese!!
