CARLTON Wheelers Cycle Club’s (CWCC) Robin Persaud yesterday morning outsprinted Geron Williams and Alonso Greaves to take the fourth annual Forbes Burnham Foundation (FBF) organised 34 miles cycle road race in a time of 1h: 12: 09s.
Thirty-four (34) cyclists faced the starter amidst the early morning rain and pedalled from Carifesta Avenue to Belfield Car Park and back to the start for the finish.
A strong field that included Eric Sankar, Marlon Williams, Paul De Nobrega, Walter Grant-Stuart, Junior Niles, Raymond Newton, Kennard Lovell, Darren Allen and Kurt La Rose along with Hazina Barrette and Naomi Singh, the two lone females journeyed to the turn back point.
Even though there were mini breaks by those involved in the event, many thought that the fall De Nobrega suffered just before the Beterverwagting Police Station entrance, while making a move with his club mate Geron Williams, cost him the race.
Geron Williams displayed true sportsmanship and humanitarian attitude, when he assisted De Nobrega back into his saddle while working in tandem to reconnect with the peloton who were not far away, which they successfully achieved.
The competitors stayed together, working in tandem until Allen and Linden’s Rastaff Oselmo made their move to the front as they approached Ogle Airstrip Road, while Greaves who dominated the field in the National Sports Commission (NSC) 40 mile event last Sunday, picked up a flat at Plaisance.
Greaves and Oselmo were caught at Sheriff Street by the chasing peloton led by Grant-Stuart and Marlon Williams, before Persaud outsprinted Geron Williams and Greaves, with the latter completing the journey despite picking up the flat back wheel to place third.
Mark Lewis, who picked up five of the 10 sprint prizes on offer during the upward journey, Jamal Nicholls and Niles completed the top six in the Open category, while La Rose took the Junior category from his Continental Cycle Club teammates in De Nobrega and Raynauth Jeffrey.
In the Veteran division, Niles took the top spot from Raymond Newton and Talim Shaw respectively, while Barrett picked up the lone female prize that was up for grabs.
The remaining sprint prizes were shared between Allen who picked up two, while Alex Menes, Tony Simon and Marlon Williams picked up one each.
Chairman of the FBF Vincent Alexander gave a brief history of the Organization as well as the late President who would have been 88 yesterday before committing to future sponsorship of the race. Akesha Simpson who is the FBF’s Secretary, assisted with the distribution of the prizes to the respective winners.
