As part of Guyana’s 41st Republic anniversary celebrations, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport last evening treated a hundred plus orphans, senior citizens and differently-abled persons to an afternoon of fun and relaxation at the Bandstand, Kingston, Georgetown.
The event was graced with the presence of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr.Frank Anthony, who disclosed that the event is an annual one which has been on for five years. He said the ministry would normally bring elderly folk out to have an enjoyable time in the spirit of Mash.
The beautifully decked-out patrons were entertained by the Guyana Police Force band and the Culture Ministry’s steel band and were also treated to an afternoon snack.
Dr. Anthony stated he was very pleased with the turnout of guests despite the inclement weather. “I am pleased with what I am seeing, but I think the weather has affected the turnout, because generally we would have had a larger turnout…”
Ms. Mary Bushelle, a member of Uncle Eddie’s Home, said she enjoyed coming out each time the Culture Ministry hosts the event. She said the entire afternoon was a pleasant one.
Ms. Bushelle also commended the ministry for promoting steel pan music as she is a big fan of it and can listen to steel pan music only around Mash time.
Ms Agra Winifred Wills said the venture is indeed a welcome one and she echoed the same sentiments about the steel pans.
She noted that the music was very relaxing and different, and she also praised the minister for bringing out the senior citizens and the kids to an afternoon of excitement.
Senior citizens and orphans were drawn from homes across Georgetown and the East Coast of Demerara. Many of them expressed gratitude to the ministry for the event.
