Agri. Ministry’s foresight to clear waterways welcomed

THE MASSIVE works being undertaken in numerous sections of our country in developing the capacity to battle the effects of climate change, in particular, high intensity unseasonal rainfall, which Guyana’s coastland is currently experiencing, is proving to be worthwhile in averting any major flooding. Recently, I noticed a massive spraying exercise of major drains and parapets along the East Cost to complement the work of the Community Drainage and Irrigation Workers. As I learnt, this well planned exercise is being undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture’s NDIA to ensure the exercise fulfill its expectations to keep waterways clear of weeds and shrubs that impedes drainage.

I must admit that this exercise is timely to deal with the current rainfall we are experiencing and has proven successful in maximizing the free flow of water during the operations of kokers and alternative drainage by pumps.

Much has been said about the response in relation to the preparation for the rainy seasons and outside of the season, but some fail to acknowledge the initiative like the simple spraying exercise undertaken to effectively discharge accumulated water, especially along the East Coast which is vulnerable.

However, I believe the multi-faceted approach by the Ministry of Agriculture and its agencies will significantly increase the drainage capacity of these vulnerable areas, which has proven to be very successful as there has been no major accumulation of water.

The Ministry of Agriculture’s ability to deal with this unseasonal erratic rainfall must be commended for their foresight to keep our drains clear and water off the land. Let us join the effort as responsible citizens to keep our drains clear and commit ourselves to avoid the dumping of garbage in waterways.
