Prime Minister calls for increased religious consciousness – on eve of Youman Nabi

Impressed by the demonstration of talent among Muslim youths in the form of songs and recitals from the Quran, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds last evening called for a greater sense of religious consciousness in society. Mr. Hinds said such an aspiration is much needed in today’s world where mankind’s capabilities seem endless as he/she acquires a significant degree of wealth and material things.
“One could become consumed with the pursuit of material things. So I think it may be as important as ever for us to strengthen religious freedoms in our societies,” Prime Minister Hinds said.

Only recently the Prime Minister participated in Guyana’s observance of Inter Faith Harmony Week, calling for greater socialization in society to the diversity of religions in Guyana.
He was at the time speaking at Jashen Meelud Un Nabi, a ceremony organised by the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) in partnership with the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) on the eve of Youman Nabi.

The event was held at the Umana Yana, featuring recitals from the Quran and singing of qaseedas by Muslim youths from various organizations, including the Diamond Islamic School, and masjids at Enmore, Strathavon and Belle West.
Also witnessing the occasion was Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony, and Chief Executive Officer of GT&T Yog Mahadeo.
Youman Nabi is the celebration of the birth of Prophet Mohammed who, according to the Quran, took the advice of his mother to “become a man and be responsible,” throughout his adult life.
Minister Anthony expressed the hope that the story and work of the Prophet Mohammed inspire both followers and non- followers of the Muslim faith.
