Commissioner of Police, Henry Alphonso Fraser, died at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital yesterday morning, after being admitted on Sunday, complaining of feeling unwell. He was 88. A member of the Guyana Police Force for 30 years, Fraser rose to the rank of Commissioner of Police in 1973 and served for three years. He was the third local person to be top cop. He succeeded the late Commissioner Carl Austin, and was credited, during his tenure, as being one with a great interest in training his ranks.
On retiring, he served as a senior partner with Barker’s Property Management Associates; and following the death of Lloyd Barker, also a former Commissioner of Police, assumed sole ownership, successfully moving the entity forward.
His widow, Mrs. Cynthia Fraser, was in shock yesterday, finding it difficult to come to terms with his death just a few hours after he complained of feeling unwell on Sunday night.
Among those offering condolences on Mr. Fraser’s death was Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green.
Mayor Green recalled being in the political fray during the time that Fraser was a senior police officer and subsequently Commissioner of Police.
Adding that the former Commissioner had served his country well, Green said, “He was confident and always applied himself with dignity, professionalism and commitment. He will be missed.”
