Tragedy at Laluni…
POLICE were, yesterday, hunting in the backlands of Laluni, along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway for a 60-year-old man following the death of his wife.
The woman, Rajpattie Ramdhari, 57, died after she was severely beaten on Monday. The mother of 13 succumbed at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) Thursday, four days after being admitted with injuries about the body, allegedly inflicted by her labourer husband, who has not been seen in their home village since his wife suffered the injuries.
It was reported that the woman fled the matrimonial home last Sunday after the beating and took refuge at her daughter’s house in the same village.
But around midday Monday, her husband went to where she was, armed with a cutlass, with which he attacked her in the presence of their daughter and a teenage son.
The lad attempted to stop the assault but had to retreat after being threatened by the cutlass wielding man and no other villagers were around to intervene.
After broadsiding his wife with the cutlass and kicking her about her body, the assailant disappeared in nearby bushes.
The woman’s daughter secured help to transport her mother to the GPH.
Another son, Ganesh Baichu, 23, told the Guyana Chronicle his mother regained consciousness after admission to the hospital but complained about searing pains in her stomach.
He said his mother had been subjected to physical abuse at the hands of his father for many years during the marriage that produced him and 12 other siblings.
He and other villagers are assisting in the hunt for his father.
