RICE farmers of Better Hope on Essequibo Coast have expressed thanks to the government for making provision in the 2011 National Budget for the construction of a sluice in their village. They said they felt happy when Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Robert Persaud, made the announcement during his address at the National Food and Nutrition Security Strategy Consultation in Anna Regina Town Hall last Friday.
One of those who made strong representation for the structure, Mr. Indar Bacchus, said he is thankful to the minister for looking into their welfare.
The Better Hope sluice, when completed, will, greatly, improve drainage in the area and put an end to the loss of paddy due to flooding during heavy rainfall.
Another sluice will be constructed at La Belle Alliance, this year, as well, also to boost drainage in Lima, both other Essequibo Coast villages.
