THE Monday death of 50-year-old Errol Gonsalves, of Lot 97 Croal Street, Stabroek, Georgetown, took the road fatality toll, for the year so far, to 17 in a similar number of accidents. For the same period, last year, 14 persons had been killed in 14 accidents.
Gonsalves, the most recent 2011 victim, is a well known city mechanic who died when the CBR motorcycle he was riding slammed into a minibus at Farm, about 12:15 hrs.
He and a pedestrian, Harrisa Mohamed, injured in the same mishap, were taken to Diamond Diagnostic Centre, also on East Bank Demerara, where Gonsalves was pronounced dead on arrival and Mohamed was referred to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she is a patient.
The driver of the minibus involved is assisting police with the investigations.
On January 11, 2011, Police Traffic Department records showed that there was an improvement in the area of enforcement during 2010.
Last year recorded 115 deaths, in comparison to 117 for 2009.
Meanwhile, the GPF said it has received meaningful support, in dealing with traffic, from the Ministry of Public Works and Communication, the National Road Safety Council, the Traffic Advisory Committee and other stakeholders.
However the GPF is, once more, urging all categories of road users to observe the five Cs – Care, Courtesy, Caution, Commonsense and Consideration.
