AS part of its bigger plans for this year and with a budgetary allocation of some $7M, plucked out from its four-year development strategy which catapulted the current officers into administration of the sport last year, the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) will honour ten of its greatest players in April. The UDFA will also start the process towards acquiring its own playing facility in an eight-year programme which should also kick start this year.
Vice-president Sharma Solomon in an exclusive interview with Chronicle Sport said his body had spoken to the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation which organises an annual tournament which is held in honour of one of Linden’s greatest players Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond.
According to Solomon, this will also be held at the conclusion of the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Under 18-championship, as he indicated “that’s going to be big and very nice, as we want to have ten of our past footballers honoured, and we want to induct them in our Hall of Fame”.
He disclosed that “every year after then we are going to induct one person every time we have this award ceremony”.
Additionally, some eight programmes are targeted for this year and it is estimated that these programmes will cost about $7M.
“How we intend to get this done? We have already spoken to some very organised individuals within the fraternity, who will work with us as consultants. They are going to give us a letter … to take to a few sponsors to help us promote and develop those eight programmes that would reflect the interest of football development and that would give coverage to the sponsors because they are credible and reputable.
“In the plans for this year there will also be a female programme and by the grace of God the UDFA will be hoping to get some tangible assistance as it relates to the acquisition of our own facility and the beginning of construction.”
With the budget already in place Solomon said that what is left to be done is to put together some more fine touches as “we are going to take this to our sponsors”.
