THE budget debate has come to an end and I can’t help but recognise the massive transformation the agriculture sector is undergoing; be it rice, livestock, crops, fisheries, drainage and yes even sugar as Guyana aspires to be the lead producer of food for the Caribbean Region. Over the years, especially after the global food and financial crises in 2008/2009 Guyana’s potentials to feed itself and other vulnerable countries in the Caribbean and further afield have been admirable. These have certainly paved the way for a new and reformed agriculture sector that is constantly evolving under the watch of the young and vibrant, Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud.
I must admit that there is still a lot more to be done and all stakeholders, particularly the private sector should take the lead to make Guyana’s agriculture sector one envied by the Caribbean and internationally as we have the potentials and wherewithal to maintain this ongoing transformation. The sector is very exciting, filled with challenges and opportunities. Judging from what I have seen and heard, a lot has been invested to improve infrastructure in farming communities, inclusive of the delivery of technical advice and other services to farmers.
Farmers are very persevering individuals and am sure will not be daunted by the challenges ahead and I believe that the government will rise once more to the occasion to deliver to our farmers and the people of Guyana.
The agriculture sector has been transformed
