Navin Chanderpaul on Government support for sugar industry

PPP Member Mr. Navin Chanderpaul continues his own media campaign against the Jagdeo-led PPPC Government. In the Stabroek news on Monday, February 7, 2011, Mr. Chanderpaul identified with the struggle of the PPP and its militant trade union constituency, the sugar workers. Somehow, Mr. Chanderpaul seems to be saying, without actually saying so, that the Jagdeo Government is betraying the Jagan legacy, by not giving unequivocal support to the sugar industry.

For Mr. Chanderpaul to repeat this nonsense publicly is astonishing, as he is no academic fool and ought to know the economy of the sugar industry.

The PPPC Government has provided solid evidence of its consistent support for the sugar industry, including the repeal of the sugar levy, support for increasing wages as a percentage of GUYSUSCO expenditure, and more recently, bailouts.

Mr. Chanderpaul cannot refute these and instead tries to create an artificial division between the PPP/C Government and the sugar workers. He declined to say how the Government has failed in supporting the sugar workers; and particularly, what more would he recommend to a PPP presidential candidate to do to earn recognition as being unequivocally supportive of the workers in the economically troubled sugar industry.
