TODAY, the 26th of January, marks the 62nd Republic Day anniversary of one of the world’s fastest developing nations — India. It is to commemorate the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect as the governing document, and replaced the Government of India Act of 1935. Gaining independence on August 15, 1947, India was governed by a modified version of the colonial Government of India Act 1935. This meant that India was still a dominion of England and not truly independent. On the 28th of August, 1947, a draft Constitution was prepared and officially effected on January 26, 1950, giving absolute power of governance over to the Indian Government.
Guyana has always shared a very close, very special relationship with India. Diplomatically, the ties between the two countries have held strong over the years, and will only grow stronger.
Ethnically and culturally, approximately 49% of Guyanese can trace their heritage back to the Motherland, India.
In respect of such compelling bonds, Guyanese far and wide should join in extending Republic wishes to the Hindustani Community, both locally and abroad.
