REGION NINE athletes Hezron Pedro and Doretta Wilson will make their international athletics debut when they represent Guyana next month in the Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships. The eight-member team to Trinidad will be anchored by the veteran Cleveland Forde while distance sensation Alika Morgan, Dennis Horatio, Wilbert Mingo, Cleveland Thomas and Nathaniel Giddings are also in the side.
The event, which is billed for the 2km grass loop of the Queen’s Park Savannah, will take place on February 19.
President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Colin Boyce, said the athletes were selected based on their performance at the National Cross-Country Race which was held last Sunday at the National Park.
Wilson, who was sensational at the National Schools’ Track and Field Championships last year, did not disappoint on Sunday after she won the 4km Junior Girls’ event.
The other Region Nine athlete, Pedro, settled for second place after he was defeated by Giddings in the 6km Junior Boys’ race.
Forde won the senior category ahead of Horatio and Mingo while Morgan was the top senior female athlete at the event.
