One drug defendant granted bail above police objection

DANIEL Wilson, of Lot 225 Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, was granted $50,000 bail yesterday, when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on an illegal drug charge. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, last January 1, he was in possession of 10 grammes of cannabis (marijuana).
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, had objected to Wilson being allowed pre-trial liberty, on the ground that he may not return to court.
However, the magistrate overruled the objection and also transferred the case to Providence Court, on East Bank Demerara, for today.
Wilson was one of two defendants who faced similar charges in the same court.
The other, Mark Anthony Chand, 18, of Lot 88 Cummings Street, Bourda, Georgetown, also denied having 10 grammes of marijuana on January 12.
The Prosecutor said that defendant was stopped by Police and a search of the transparent bag he was carrying yielded leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited narcotic.
Chand, too, was ordered to post $50,000 surety and his case will be called, again, on January 24.
