The Flight of Hope Hinterland Outreach Ministries has once again demonstrated the spirit of generosity on Saturday as they donated a quantity of stationery, sporting equipment and first aid supplies to the recently commissioned Ministry of Amerindian Affairs Hinterland Scholarship dormitory at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara. The objective of the two-year-old humanitarian organization, spearheaded by Captain Orlando Charles, an Air Services Limited (AS L) pilot, is to assist those persons in remote hinterland communities across Guyana.
Accepting the donation on behalf of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Permanent Secretary Collin Croal expressed his gratitude for the timely gesture, and said, “I would like to thank Flight of Hope for this donation and to say that it is one of the partner agencies of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.”
He recognized the significance of the gift and said that apart from the donation of equipment and supplies, Flight of Hope is also responsible for a series of voluntary flights to interior locations.
In addition, Croal explained that the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has also promised to collaborate with the Amerindian Affairs ministry to improve facilities at the institution which has been recently set up and caters for over 120 students from hinterland communities across the country.
“This dormitory was commissioned last September, to the tune of $95M, and it is an expansive and accommodating building,” he explained.
Continuing, Croal encouraged the students to take good care of the items and to use them in a manner that would enhance their overall education.
“It is part of the process that when you receive, you need to take command of what you have,” he told the students.
The Hinterland Scholarship Programme is fully supported by the Government, through the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, and provides school necessities, accommodation and meals for scholarship students, in addition to a monthly stipend.
Meanwhile, Captain Charles thanked the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs for its continued support of the Flight of Hope initiative in its quest to provide assistance to communities in need.
Alluding to the driving force behind the humanitarian effort, he said, “I have flown around Guyana in its entirety, and I have seen the desperate need of persons and identified areas where we could be of help, especially in the remote areas that are not easily accessible.
He said that the donation would not have been possible without the support from private and public entities, such as Captain Praimnauth Mohanlall, L-Mart Furniture Stores, and the proprietor of Mike’s Pharmacy on Sheriff Street.
“This is not the end since there will be other gestures for the facility and more for the Hinterland communities; and I want to encourage persons and organisations to do something for some one and to make a donation in anyway that they can,” Charles advocated.
