PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – The funeral service for the late Joey Carew has been moved from the Queen’s Park Oval.
The service will now take place at St Theresa’s Church in the Trinidad & Tobago capital on Friday morning. Michael Jr, Carew’s eldest son, explained yesterday that the family wanted the funeral to take place at the Oval because of the number of people who are expected to attend.
Under the Catholic order, however, the family would have needed permission from the church for the service to take place at the famous cricket ground.
Michael Jr added that the family decided to take the easy route, and allow the service at the church, which is located near to the Carew home.
The service takes place at 10:00 h. and then Carew’s remains will be cremated at a nearby crematorium.
Michael Jr noted that there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Oval after the cremation.
Carew, a former Trinidad & Tobago captain and West Indies batsman, passed away at his home in Woodbrook in the T&T capital late on Saturday. He was 73.
His passing followed a trip to a medical clinic to seek treatment for a blood clot on his foot.
Carew was also a former chairman of the West Indies selection panel, enjoying three stints totalling over 20 years before he resigned five years ago.
He is widely regarded for mentoring T&T and West Indies batting legend, Brian Lara, who resided at his home for a number of years before achieving international cricket stardom.
