Bassarath says Singh’s exit a blow to the region

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Trinidad and Tobago cricket chief Azim Bassarath has described as a huge blow the pending exit of Guyana Cricket Board president Chetram Singh, who announced last week he will step down when his current term ends in January. “He was in charge of Guyana’s cricket during a very successful period for their youth cricket and this showed that he knew of development,” said Bassarath.
“At the WICB level he made sterling contributions and was well respected. The TTCB would like to wish him and Guyana’s cricket all the best in the future and I must say his leaving is a great loss for cricket in the region.”
Singh, also a West Indies Cricket Board director, has been head of the GCB for the last 19 years.
Under him, Guyana won six consecutive regional Under-19 titles, five limited overs crowns and a first class championship.
In recent years, however, he has had to deal with internal wrangling in the organisation and ill health, which forced him to seek medical assistance overseas this year.
Bassarath said Singh had been an astute thinker on cricketing issues.
“I got to know Chetty when I worked for the Local Organising Committee during the World Cup in 2007,” Bassarath noted.
“I had dealings with Chetty and I found him to be very intelligent in matters concerning West Indies cricket.”
