Bishoo, Campbelle win top GCB honours

BERBICE leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo was named Cricketer-of-the-Year while teenaged all-rounder Shemaine Campbelle collected the women’s version when the Guyana Cricket Board staged their annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday night. The 25-year-old Bishoo led the list of winners as he also picked up the Regional Cricketer-of-the-Year award, while youth cricketer Amir Khan dominated the Under-19 category.
Campbelle, meanwhile, clinched her honour after having a solid series with the bat in the WICB Women’s Championship in St Vincent earlier this year.
Bishoo, who plays for Albion domestically,
put together a string of good performances for Guyana this year and was rewarded with selection to the West Indies A team for their 50-over Home Series against Pakistan A last month.
The right-armer has taken 71 wickets from 18 first class matches since his five-wicket haul on debut against Combined Campuses and Colleges at Providence two years ago, and has also collected 25 wickets from 10 one-day games.
Bishoo began the year by taking 24 wickets including two five-wicket hauls and was Guyana’s leading wicket-taker in their disappointing performance in the WICB first-class Championship.
He grabbed 10 wickets and the Man-of-the Series award to help Guyana win the inaugural Caribbean Cup T20 tournament to qualify for the Champions League in South Africa.
The year was a successful one for the 18-year-old Campbelle who scored a wonderful unbeaten century against St Lucia in this year’s Women’s Championship, playing in the fifth place play-off.
She captured the Player-of-the-Series award after making 166 runs at an average of 83, and taking eight wickets with her leg-spin at an average of 10.75 in four matches.
Campbelle has played 11 One-Day Internationals for West Indies since making her debut against South Africa in October last year.
Khan, meanwhile, took home the junior Cricketer-of-the-Year award and also claimed the TCL Under-19 Bowler-of-the-Year honour.
He was Guyana’s leading wicket taker in this year’s WICB Under-19 three-day competition in St Lucia with 27 scalps including three five-wicket hauls, and was also outstanding in the three-day Inter-county Under-19 competition for Demerara.
The left-handed Kwame Crosse copped the TCL Under-19 Batsman-of-the-Year award while Sherwin McPherson took the TCL Under-19 Best fielder award.
National middle-order batman Royston Crandon received the Domestic Cricketer-of-the-Year trophy while West Indies High Performance Centre opening batsman Rajendra Chandrika collected the Most Improved Player trophy.
