TOSHAO of Akawini, Mr. David Wilson, has announced that the Amerindian community, in lower Pomeroon, has embarked on large scale cultivation of passion fruit.
He said the forested land is very fertile and the venture into the agricultural cultivation can boost the earnings of farmers. Wilson said the Village Council is giving the planters every support needed to engage in the pursuit.
Akawini farmers are also cultivating huge acreages with suckers, cassava and other ground provisions, citrus and more fruits.
In another Amerindian community, Mashabo, residents are cashing in on the sale of casareep for the festive season.
