Dangerous driver fined after accident avoided

TRUCK driver Omashankar Parmanand, of Gangaram, East Canje, who forced the driver of Berbice Divisional Commander Steven Merai to take evasive action to avoid a collision, was yesterday fined $15,000. The defendant pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, before Magistrate Omeyana Hamlinton, at New Amsterdam Court.
He admitted that, last December 4, he was behind the wheel of GMM 5087, when, on the Number Two Public Road, Corentyne, also in Berbice, he, suddenly, drove his vehicle into the path of PKK 885, which was being driven by Police Corporal Grant, with Merai inside.
Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said Grant was the chauffeur assigned to Assistant Commissioner Merai.
The Prosecutor said the truck had been parked on the northern carriageway but, when the Commander’s vehicle was about to pass, Parmanand swerved in its direction.
