AN unidentified male, suspected to be of Amerindian decent, was fished out of the Canje Creek in Berbice just before noon yesterday.
The body, which was partially decomposed, was discovered by a group of young men who had gone to the area to search for a missing boat.
Hubert Thomas, 31, told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday morning that, whilst in company with his stepson Mark Anthony Kellowan, and David Thomas, they motored up the Canje river in search of his boat which was moored at a now defunct resort.
About half an hour into the journey, Thomas said he observed a body entangled amongst the vegetation which lined the northern side of the waterway.
As a result, he returned to New Amsterdam, where a report was made at Central Police station, from where sleuths returned with him to the scene.
Thomas said it was a challenge to remove the body of the man which was entwined in the base of the plant.
However, aided by a cutlass, the team comprising three police ranks, removed the body which was partially ‘eaten’, and towed it alongside the boat, transporting same to Sheet Anchor in East Canje.
Meanwhile, scores of persons traversing along the Canje Bridge, got a view of the body which laid below, the overpass.
The remains which were partially decomposed were dressed in a jersey marked ‘Somebody in Guyana loves me’, and a short pants. Berbice Crime Chief Superintendent Ramsey is asking the citizenry to assist the police with any information, in order that the body be identified.
A post mortem examination is to be performed today.
