Windies gain vital points to move up ICC rankings

KANDY, Sri Lanka – The West Indies gained some crucial rating points in the just concluded three-match series against Sri Lanka to move closer to Pakistan in the ICC Test Championship table released yesterday. The two teams played to three draws in the series as a combination of bad weather and a resurgent West Indies performance with both bat and ball deprived the home team of a single victory as the series ended on Sunday at the Pallekele Stadium, in the central city of Kandy.
For managing to avoid defeat, new captain Darren Sammy and his team are now placed just three ratings points behind Pakistan in seventh position. Overall the West Indies have 85 points while Pakistan have 88 points. New Zealand are the next side below the West Indies on 80 points.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka dropped two places to fifth spot in the rankings.
The ICC outlined that with the West Indies ranked four places below Kumar Sangakkara’s side prior to the first match, a drawn series has knocked Sri Lanka down to 109 ratings points, behind England and Australia, which in turn both gain one place as a result.
