Venezuelan jailed, fined also for illegal entry, conspiracy

A VENEZUELAN woman was yesterday fined $30,000 and sentenced to a total of two years six months imprisonment, on conviction for illegal entry into Guyana, uttering a
forged document and conspiracy.
Tamar Gomez, 26, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded guilty to the charges which said:
* on December 2, at Ogle Airport, East Coast Demerara, she uttered, to an immigration officer, a Venezuelan passport containing a forged Guyana entry stamp and a forged tourist
visa dated October 5, 2010, purporting to show that she entered this country on that date with the visa;

* between October 5 and December 2, with intent to defraud, she conspired with persons unknown to forge one Guyana tourist visa in a Venezuelan passport, purporting to show that she came here on October 5, 2010, knowing the document was false;

* between October 5 and December 2, she conspired with persons unknown to forge a Guyana entry stamp in a Venezuelan passport knowing it to be false and

* between October 5 and December 2, in Essequibo, she entered Guyana other than at a port of entry and failed to present herself to an immigration officer.

Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the alien was at Ogle Airport, about to embark on a flight to the North West District when the immigration
officer saw the stamp and visa in her passport.
The prosecutor said, upon examination, the immigration officer found the stamp and visa to have been forged and Gomez was arrested.
Through an interpreter, the convict said she was sorry and only wanted to know more about Guyana.
However, during her stay, she went into the interior to sell clothing.
On the charge of illegal entry, she was fined $30,000 and jailed for 12 months.
For uttering the forged document and conspiracy, she was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, but the sentences will run concurrently.
