Accused 2006 bank robber nabbed in drug bust

TERRENCE Azore, one of the men charged with the 2006 bank robbery at Rose Hall, Corentyne, was nabbed at a Golden Grove, West Coast Berbice roadblock, on Wednesday. On Thursday, the defendant, of Lot 577 Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop, at the Fort  Wellington Court, also on the
West Coast Berbice, charged with trafficking in 755 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana).
Azore pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison until February 3, 2011.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Donna Grant-Fraser,  said, the defendant was a passenger in HB 8362, en route to Georgetown, when the vehicle was stopped shortly before
15:00 h .
The prosecutor said the four passengers, including two women were searched, but the narcotic was found in a haversack Azore was carrying across his back.
On August 11, 2006, heavily armed bandits stormed the Demerara Bank, in bustling Rose Hall town, carting off $11,200,000, after shooting a woman in the back.
Eight of the robbers were later shot and killed in a confrontation with Police in the backlands of Black Bush Polder, Corentyne.
But Azore, 43, Harlan Lepps, 34 and Henry Lindie, 43, of De Veldt, Berbice River, alleged members of the robbery gang, faced a joint charge of  robbery under arms and
were committed to stand trial at the Berbice Assizes.
However, the depositions from the preliminary inquiry (PI) were lost and pre-trial proceedings have restarted at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court.
