Convicted drug trafficker Denhart jailed

GEORGE Denhart, of Coomacka, Berbice River, who admitted trafficking in one kilogramme 50 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) was jailed on Monday.
Magistrate Krishendat Persaud imposed a sentence of four years imprisonment and a fine of   $1,149,600, three times the street value of the narcotic, at the New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, as well .
If the prisoner does not pay the monetary penalty, he will have to serve an additional 18 months in jail.
After Denhart, 23,  pleaded guilty to the offence, Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said, earlier on November 29, other Police ranks were on mobile patrol when, in the vicinity of the New Amsterdam Market, they saw the convict acting in a suspicious manner, with a black haversack in his possession.
The suspected trafficker was stopped and a search of the bag yielded four parcels, containing leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant.
