‘Uncle Joe’ Hillaire dead by suspected suicide

WELL-KNOWN Joseph Hillaire called ‘Uncle Joe’, 70, proprietor of Hillaire’s Jewellery and Gift Shop at Brickdam and Chalmers Place, Georgetown, died of a gunshot wound Tuesday night.
His death was pronounced on arrival at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where his lifeless body, with a single wound to the head, was taken after it was found at the Lot 57 ‘B’  Brickdam and Chalmers Place building that was his home and business place.

The discovery, about 23:00 hrs, led to suspicion that he shot himself but his wife, Bibi said Police are investigating the circumstances.
Hillaire, a Grenadian by birth, who acquired Guyanese citizenship, came to Guyana many years ago and was involved in gold mining and trading in rough and polished diamonds.
The licensed firearm holder was discovered in his bathroom and the gun, five live rounds and a spent shell were next to the body.
His corpse is at the GPH mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.
