GPL expresses concern, continues appeal against electricity theft
GUYANA Power & Light (GPL) has expressed concern over the electrocution of Leslie Clarkson, in Sophia, Greater Georgetown and electricity theft.
The utility said, in a press release on Tuesday, that it was another death while attempting an illegal connection and continued to appeal for persons to desist from tampering with its network.
GPL noted that, while the rains have put whole communities at risk, scant regard is paid to the reality.
It said GPL is fighting a daily battle, day and night, to stop illegal connections.
The release recalled the daily and aggressive representation by persons in Sophia to receive electricity and their promises to help secure installation.
“Hundreds of millions dollars later, our crews have to seek Police protection to remove hundreds of illegal connections on a routine basis,” the release said.
It disclosed that GPL losses in December 2009 rose to such a level that it eroded all the gains made in the previous 11 months of that year.
“GPL will, therefore, be very active, this Christmas season, to try to stem this illegal activity,” the statement said.
The dead body of Clarkson alias ‘Metro’, 30, of ‘D’ Field, Sophia, was found near his home early Monday morning, clutching a live electricity wire wrapped around his waist.
He had a small grocery shop and lived alone but other residents in the area, who made the discovery about 06:00 hrs, suspect that he met his demise on Sunday night, while trying to make an illegal electrical connection to his residence.
