…20 designers will show off their creations
More than 20 local designers are expected to come together to display their work in the first ever fashion market at the Pegasus Hotel this Sunday.
At a press conference at the Pegasus Hotel, yesterday, CEO of Guyana Fashion Weekend (GFW), designer Sonia Noel, said the fashion market would allow persons to find fashion that would set them apart.
Stating her passion for the fashion industry, the veteran designer said that she is optimistic about the venture, noting that there were more young designers this year. She said that fashion is a multi-billion dollar industry which she would like Guyana to benefit from.
Noel said that she would like to see fashion become a sustainable industry and not something someone does as a hobby or something on the side. She noted also that she would like persons to be able to go and further their studies in the field of design.
Pointing out that fashion is viewed by some as trivial, she pointed out how fashion is benefitting the community, citing the GFW Awareness campaign and the committees’ contributions to the David Rose School for the handicapped. She encouraged parents to support their children in doing what they like, observing that parents often discourage children from a career in the arts.
Addressing the issue of pricing, Noel said that there is clothing for every budget, explaining that many designers are focusing on ready-to-wear lines that are less pricey than the more extravagant, detailed pieces, explaining that a lot of details were one factor that drove designer prices up.
Reiterating that there would be fashion for everyone at the fashion market, she said the designers were tapping into the full figured market, pointing out that it is often more difficult for full figured persons to find fashionable clothing to fit them.
Noel said the marketplace would give designers a chance to display their clothing, noting that everyone cannot afford an expensive store space.
CEO of Pegasus Hotel, Robert Badal, said that the fashion industry is a significant one all over the world and contributes to local craftsmanship, culture and entrepreneurship.
Noting that Christmas and Mashramani are approaching, Christopher Goodridge, a member of the Designers Association of Guyana, encouraged persons to come out and support the show.
The event is planned to be a regular one which will take place on the third Sunday of every month.
The event which is entirely free will be hosted at the Pegasus Hotel on November 28, 2010, from 09:00hrs to 21:00hrs.
