Assault defendant severely beat virtual complainant

Court told…
ANDREW Vansertima, of Lot 93 First Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, was yesterday granted $5,000 bail on an unlawful assault charge.
He pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Particulars of the offence said, last November 6, he unlawfully assaulted Randy Augustin.

Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant was awakened by a loud noise in his yard that day and, upon investigating, saw the defendant chasing after someone else with an ice pick.
The prosecutor said Augustin enquired, from Vansertima, what he was doing on the premises and the latter replied that he was there to kill him. The property owner then ventured outside and a scuffle ensued between them, resulting in Augustin being severely beaten.
The defendant claimed he was chasing one of a group of boys who were breaking bottles on the roadway and ended up with Augustin starting the fight.
The case will be called, again, on December 2.
