LED by their leading spiker Sheriffa Purperhant, Suriname rebounded from losing the first set to dominate and at the same time humiliate home team Guyana in their volleyball matchup, as action in the second leg of the 2010 Inter-Guiana Games got under way at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) last Friday. It was the first loss for Guyana who flattered to deceive after winning the first game 25-23, as they went under 9-25, 8-25 and 13-25 in the next three games to the eventual winners whose athleticism proved advantageous in the long run as they went on a spiking spree led by the rampant Purperhant.
She had the Guyanese players diving unsuccessfully to bring back her sizzling smacks from Suriname’s side of the net, much to the delight of her teammates and their band of supporters who cheered every point won as if it was an Olympic medal gained.
In female basketball, Suriname were yet again a dominant force as they ousted French Guiana 51-39 in the curtain-raiser, thanks to the sterling efforts of their leading scorer Naarden Cheyenne who scored 16 points that was complemented by her eight steals.
Parsdran Stefane netted three baskets from beyond the arc for Suriname in her 15 to go along with her six rebounds and eight steals while receiving worthy support from Margaret Bannor who played well to accumulate her 11 points, while snatching eight rebounds and taking French Guiana’s ball away six times.
Only Joseph Marie Estelle managed to obtain double figures for French Guiana with her 10 points, while she got 7 steals and 4 rebounds.
Suriname continued their dominance over the host country, when they routed them 99-39 in their female basketball matchup yesterday, which more than guaranteed them the female title once again.
Cheyenne got 23 points, 7 steals and 4 rebounds to lead the Surinamese and got support from Daphne Ferrier, 17 points 4 steals, and Bannor who scored 16 points that was complemented by 9 rebounds and 6 steals.
Laquantelia Gibson led the scoring for Guyana with 17 points while Tamara Hunter got 12,as they failed to stop their opponents who led 19-4, 49-19 and 73-32 at the end of the first three quarters.
Guyana’s lone reason to smile came in male basketball, when skipper Akeem ‘The Dream’ Khanai netted 26 points as they defeated French Guiana 69-62 in their encounter, of which Alain Jacinth and Charles Malderby scored 14 and 11 points each for French Guiana while they both snatched 6 rebounds.
In cycling, Suriname took both the male and female time trials which was held yesterday morning from Guyana and French Guiana respectively.
The Surinamese clocked 10m : 02 seconds to take the male title from Guyana who were eight seconds slower and French Guiana a further 42 seconds slower, while their female cyclists clocked 13:25 to take that title from French Guiana who were 9 seconds slower, with Guyana languishing in the rear 14 seconds slower than the second-place team.
The action continues today with the cyclists being involved in a road race on the West Bank of Demerara, while Guyana’s male and female basketball and volleyball teams will take on French Guiana and Suriname respectively at the CASH. Up to press time, there were no reports on the chess matches.
The closing ceremony is set for the same venue at 19:00 h today.
