– a week after being struck down by Canter truck on pedestrian crossing
SIXTY-year-old Grethel Lewis, the female police rank struck down by a canter truck in the vicinity of the Police Special Branch on Camp Road and Barrack Street in the City last week, succumbed to head injuries at the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital on Tuesday night.
She died around 22:30 hrs, while yet on life support, never having regained consciousness.
Lewis, who had retired two weeks earlier, after serving the Guyana Police Force for more than 15 years, was struck down on a pedestrian crossing, shortly after 10:00 hrs last week Tuesday, after leaving her former workplace, where she had gone to look after her retirement benefits.
She is survived by her two brothers, Lennox Jacobs and Randolph Lewis and other relatives.
Jacobs, who described his sister as a quiet and likeable person who was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness denomination, recalled that he had in mind to present her with a motor cycle for her birthday.
However, considering what he referred to as “the madness on the road”, he changed his mind about the choice of gift. “I changed my mind, because I considered it might have been a bit risky for her to travel from Georgetown to Mocha, especially on the East Bank road, “but it made no difference,” he lamented.
Meanwhile, the driver of the mother vehicle was charged, placed on bail and is expected to keep reporting to the police until the date of the trial.
