Two East Coast Demerara fires leave 22 homeless

Two separate fires, both of unknown origin, have left 22 persons homeless after they ripped through three dwelling houses on the East Coast of Demerara yesterday and on Sunday. Reports said that the fires could be electrical in origin, and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has launched an investigation.
The fire yesterday broke out just after 14:00 h at 112 June Street, Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, destroyed two houses and left 16 homeless.

The fire reportedly started in the middle bedroom of the upper flat of a two storey house.
One of the occupants, Rochelle Josiah, said that she was in the lower flat of the building along with her son watching television when she saw the smoke.
She quickly left the house, as the fire raged through it and then caught the second building in the yard, engulfing that as well.

Josiah said that thirteen persons occupied the two storey building while three others lived in the other house.
Meanwhile, another fire, also of unknown origin, on Sunday, at about 11:00h, gutted a house at 27 Bush Corner Dam, Golden Grove Housing Scheme, also on the East Coast Demerara, leaving six homeless.
The caretaker of the building, Dexter Bristol, said he is of the opinion that the fire was electrical in origin.
