THE Mainstay/Whyaka Amerindian Village Council has launched its cultural development project under the theme “Promoting Sustainable livelihood and Cultural Heritage while Sustaining our Village Economy”.
Region Two Chairman Alli Baksh, speaking at the launch of the project last Wednesday at Mainstay Village Community Centre, said the community is moving in the right direction to develop and sustain its culture.
According to the Chairman, Guyana is a country with a diverse culture and he is happy that the Mainstay/Whyaka Community will be promoting the Arawak language.
Mr. Baksh encouraged the community to do the project on a micro-level base.
Toshao of the community Ms. Yvonne Pearson, said the project is very historic for Mainstay, as it will enable young people in the village to learn the Arawak language. Pearson said 58 persons have already registered for the language class, 36 for craft and 31 for dance.
The project is funded by the International Development Bank (IDB) and will last for three months.
