CLEVELAND London, 38, of Lot 6 Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Housing Scheme, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was yesterday sentenced to three months imprisonment after he admitted assaulting his reputed wife. Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry imposed the custodial penalty on him for the unlawful and malicious assault on Candace Barrington, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant was taking her son to school when the prisoner approached her and an argument ensued between them.
The Prosecutor said London cuffed the woman in the face several times.
After sentence was pronounced, Barrington, with a swollen left eye, told the Court she did not want to continue the prosecution.
However, the magistrate informed her it was too late to make that decision because London had already been convicted.
Barrington left the courtroom in tears, telling London she was sorry.
