Three Essequibo fishermen were robbed by armed pirates Saturday night while they were in the Atlantic some ten miles off Cozier on the Essequibo Coast. Captain and owner of the fishing vessel, Deomanram Nathram, in an interview with the Guyana chronicle, said at about 22;30 hrs Saturday, while he and his two crew members were asleep in the cabin, six pirates came on board and demanded gasoline. Two of them were armed with guns.
They took the fuel and ransacked the boat. They took cell phones, fish glue, and two gold rings from the captain’s fingers, cursing all the time.
Then the robbers sped away in a speed boat powered by a 200 hp engine. Nathram said the boat was marked P16 Wande, and carried a licence number which he could not have read.
The captain said that after the ordeal, he was able to travel to shore using some gasoline he had hidden on the boat when they left shore.
Nathram said he always stashed away some fuel in case of emergencies.
The police at Charity are investigating after Nathram reported the incident to them.
