THE National Trust of Guyana (NTG) has concluded an outreach programme that coincided with the commemoration of Heritage Week, October 4 to 8, under the theme ‘Partnering for Effective Preservation: My Role, Your Role’.
NTG Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Nirvana Persaud said it was executed at schools in Regions Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), Four (Demerara/Mahaica) and Six (East Berbice/Corentyne).
She said the aim was to create awareness and the role the student has to play in the preservation of heritage.
The secondary schools chosen to benefit from the educational and informative seminars were Anna Regina Multilateral and Charity, Abram’s Zuil, Aurora, West Demerara, Leonora, Vryman’s Erven and Houston and Berbice High.
Research and Documentation Officer, Ms. Bhavana Gossai said the interactive sessions saw positive exchanges between the facilitators and students.
“We explained to the students what monuments were, how they differed and also showed them that they, too, can play a role in preserving our heritage,” she said.
Gossai said the students were informed about the various heritage monument sites and lectured on the importance of preserving them and their role in the process.
The NTG was established with the passage of the National Trust Act Number 7 of 1972, which made provision for the preservation of monuments, sites, places and objects of historic interest or national importance.
Its mandate is to conserve, preserve and promote the nation’s patrimony, so that present and future generations can access and enjoy the richness of Guyana’s heritage.
