Chest cold patient jailed for narcotics possession

SHIRLANDER Persaud, 33, who claims he uses narcotics to treat his chest cold, was jailed on Thursday for being in possession of cannabis (marijuana) and cocaine.
Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo imposed two-year sentences on the father of a one-year-old child, at New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice.

Defence Counsel Charrandas Persaud had asked that the Court be lenient with the convict who was found guilty, submitting that the prisoner had been plagued by the ailment for years.
Police Lance Corporal Shurland King led evidence that, on October 31, 2008, ranks were on mobile patrol at Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice when they stopped in the vicinity of Profit’s Shop and saw Persaud, acting in a suspicious manner.
He was stopped and a search of his person yielded two paper parcels containing leaves, seeds and stems of the cannabis plant and cocaine.
