Autopsy reveals cause of Skeldon Hospital childbirth death

AN autopsy performed on the body of 21-year-old childbirth victim, Yogeeta Bishram, of Number 60 Village, Corentyne, established that she succumbed to anaemia, compounded by shock, due to excessive haemorrhaging.
Government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh undertook the post mortem examination on Monday at New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary, also in Berbice.

The mother of two died last week Wednesday at the same hospital, after being transferred there from Sheldon Hospital, Corentyne, where she had delivered a baby girl.
Mother-in-law of the deceased, Premala Gobin told the Guyana Chronicle she had escorted her daughter-in-law to Skeldon Hospital shortly after 21:00 h on Tuesday and left minutes later.
The woman remembered standing outside her gate, along the Corentyne  Public Road, waiting for her son who lived on the adjoining house lot, when she saw an ambulance speed past.
She said she suspected that Yogeeta was in the vehicle but travelled to Skeldon Hospital where she was informed of her granddaughter’s birth and the mother’s transfer to New Amsterdam Hospital.
The distraught woman said, on the return trip, her son, Chandradat Gobin joined her and they journeyed to New Amsterdam Hospital. On arrival there, they proceeded to the Maternity Unit and were directed to the Labour Room, before being taken outside and given the grim news by an attending nurse.
The dead woman’s husband said he was disappointed that the Skeldon Hospital staff did not notify the family of Yogeeta’s transfer, although they had their telephone numbers .
He expressed regret at not getting to speak to his wife prior to her death.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is continuing its investigation into the demise of the woman who also leaves to mourn a two-year-old daughter, Diana.
Bishram’s childbirth death is one of several which occurred recently, causing alarm and triggering concern at the highest level of Government, too.
