Another Impressive Day of Interaction

MORE than one thousand youths and students participated in an exciting day of Interaction at the two Community Centres in Goed Fortuin.
The day’s event started with an impressive uniformed March Past.  However, the day’s activities concluded with hundreds of participants rallying behind a bowl out between the female cricket teams from La Grange and Tuschen / Uitvlugt.  With the place getting real dark the organizers were forced to declare joint winners.

The Days of Interaction 2010 organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/ National Sports Commission and the Regional Administrations continued last Sunday at the Goed Fortuin Community Centre Ground where another impressive Day of Interaction was held.
This event was the third in a series of interactive community sports extravaganzas for this year.
The activity is a continuing effort by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/ National Sports Commission to actively engage communities throughout the country to highlight the importance of regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle; to promote peace, unity and co-operation among communities and to encourage persons to fully utilize the many community grounds and all other sports facilities that are available to them.
Present at the day’s activities were Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, Director of Sport,  Neil Kumar,  Julius Faeber, Regional Chairman, Region # 3 amoung other Regional Officials.
The Regional Chairman welcomed all to the region and specifically to the Day of Interaction.  He also was high in praise for the large turnout of approximately one thousand participants coming from twelve Neighbourhood Democratic Councils along the banks and coast of the region.
The Organizers were also happy with the tremendous support shown by the people of Region # 3 and the efforts displayed by the Regional Administration.  They also indicated that the turnout is an indication of the interest of the communities in the development of not only sports but closer community bonds.
The Minister continued to impose upon the communities the importance of sports for the individuals and their communities.  He too commended the turnout and encouraged all to have fun.
The March Past of athletes and officials produced profound effect on the minds of all in attendance.
There were colourful, creative and artistic banners, well uniformed contingents vying for several incentives that were up for grabs.
The participants began gathering as early as 08:00h and presented a genuine representation of the Guyanese population with all its ethnic groups involved.
The activity has grown in every way.  Sunday’s Day of Interaction experienced the involvement of two female Softball teams from Kitty (Georgetown) and Annandale from East Coast Demerara.
The day’s events were highly competitive as representatives from the various communities challenged each other at Table Tennis (juniors and seniors), Volleyball, Football, Domino, Softball Cricket (male and female) and Chess.
The final results are as follows:-
1.    Table Tennis
Juniors

Danielle Samaroo, an IGG female Volleyball player, dominated and captured the winner’s trophy and beat Renaldo Griffith into second position.

Seniors

Kumarraj Thakur was the winner with Dharampaul Etwaroo second.  The elimination process was highly competitive as the players displayed good skills.
Mr. Muniram was elated as the players played competitively.

2.    Volleyball

Of the six teams which participated, Goed Fortuin Squatting Area defeated their counterpart, Goed Fortuin Scheme.  The young Goed Fortuin players were very skillful.

3.    Football

This event saw eight teams participating.  Tuschen/ Uitvlugt NDC defeated Malgre Tout/ Meerzorgen in the final by 1 goal to nil.

4.    Domino

Hague/ Blankenburg A and B teams and Stewartville/ Cornelia Ida contested the final of the fifteen teams which participated.  The final placings were Hague/ Blankenburg B first, Stewartville/ Cornelia Ida second and Hague/ Blankenburg A third.  The Domino games dominated the indoor competitions as the games went late into the evening.

5.    Softball Cricket

Female
The six teams that participated played exciting and closely contested matches.  The final between Tuschen/ Uitvlugt NDC and La Grange / Niemes NDC was sensational and emotional.  In the five overs aside both teams scored twenty six runs.

The game went into one over bowl out and a three ball bowl out, none of which changed the result.  The two teams were then declared joint winners and shared the champion honours.

Male

Thirteen teams battled for the final positions.  In the end, Windsor Forest/ Novelle Flanders NDC challenged Malgre Tout/ Meerzorgen in a low scoring final under rainy weather.
Batting first, Windsor Forest/ Novelle Flanders scored twelve runs in their allotted five overs. Malgre Tout/ Meerzorgen in reply, scored thirteen runs for three wickets and were the champions.

6.    Chess
Of a field of six players, Alvin Hercules won, with Suraj Dhanpaul securing the runner – up position.

In the March Past, Toevlugt/ Patentia NDC won the prize for the Best Banner.  The prizes for the best Uniformed Contingent and the Largest Contingent went to Tuschen/ Uitvlugt NDC.
At the presentation ceremony, the Director of Sport Neil Kumar thanked all for attending, participating and supporting.  Trophies were presented to the winners and runners – up in the various disciplines
