Barrington, Bourne, Ferrier and Bishun grab five – wicket hauls
DISCARDED national opening batsman Shemroy Barrington, Ranole Bourne, Dion Ferrier and Totaram Bishun snared five wickets each for their respective teams on the first
day of action in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) organized Heroes Cup sponsored first division competition yesterday.
Playing for the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) against the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) at Camp Ayanganna, Barrington grabbed 5-15 from eight overs of gentle off spin, while Bishun nabbed 5-62 for Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in their matchup against Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC), for whom Ferrier took 5-69.
At the Everest Cricket Club ground, the home team who were asked to take first strike by their guests Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) were bowled out for 102, with Bourne (5-40) and Collis Butts 4-38 doing the damage with the ball.
At the close, GNIC had taken first innings points and stretch their lead to 49 with five wickets in hand, ending the day on 151-5 from 37 overs thanks to Shawn De Souza’s unbeaten 80 (8×4), David Dick 21 and Bourne who was unbeaten with De Souza on 18.
Amir Khan and Leon Scott have so far taken two wickets each for Everest.
In the GDF/GCC encounter, the home team won the toss and decided to take first strike and were bowled out for 118 from 45.3 overs, with only Trevon Garraway who made 32 (3×6, 1×4), Jeremiah Harris 28 (4×4) and Dillon Heyliger 20 (3×4) leading the way with the bat.
Raj Nanan (4-35), Joshua Wade (2-18) and Gavin Singh 2-43 did the damage with the ball for GCC, who fought off a determined bowling display from Barrington to take a 39 runs lead into the second day, as they ended on 157-8 from 48 overs.
Skipper Leon Johnson led the way with 60 (6×4, 3×6) while adding 54 for the second wicket with Wasim Haslim who made 22 after Ricardo Jadunauth was dismissed by Harris (1-25).
Vishal Singh offered support to Johnson and Haslim with his 21, while Gavin Singh and Wade were the not out batsmen on 9 each for GCC.
At the DCC ground, the home teams were engaged in a battle for first innings points with their nemesis MSC.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, DCC were bowled out for 240 off 51.3 overs with discarded national wicketkeeper/batsman Derwin Christian maintaining his rich vein of form by hitting eight sixes and two fours in his 66.
He added 66 for the fourth wicket with his skipper Christopher Barnwell who struck four fours and three sixes in his 43, while Utam Munroe 27 and Jamal Hinckson 18 (3×6) against the bowling of Ferrier who got worthy support from Quason Nedd (2-25).
At the close of play, MSC were 119 – 5 made off 44 overs, with their hopes for first innings points hinging on Ferrier who following up on his century scored in the last round, was unbeaten on 34 decorated with six fours while Kellon Carmichael (35, 3×4; 1×6) and Danny Narayan 24 offered support against the bowling of Bishun who took his five wickets off 19 overs.
Today is the final day for all three matches with play set to commence at 09:30h and culminate at 17:30h.
