Another childbirth death at New Amsterdam Hospital

ANOTHER young mother has died at the New Amsterdam Hospital in Berbice, the fourth within the last five weeks.

Twenty-one-year- old Yogetta Bisham has left her newborn daughter whom she delivered yesterday morning. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the institution, Mr. Leslie Cadogan referred the media to the Ministry of Health in Georgetown, when asked about the recent maternal deaths. Outside the hospital mortuary, Bisham’s husband, Chandradat Gobin and his mother, Premala Gobin were inconsolable on learning of the demise of their loved one.

The mother-in-law lamented: “I can’t imagine this. She telephoned me at 03:00 hrs saying she was in severe pain and now she has gone.”

The grandmother of four said she returned a call to her daughter-in-law at 04:30 hrs but got no response.

The elder woman, who resides at Number 60 Village, said she escorted the patient to Skeldon Hospital, at Corentyne, shortly after 21:00 h on Tuesday and left for home minutes later.

She said she was standing at her gate, awaiting her son, who lives on the adjoining house lot along the Corentyne Public Road, when she saw an ambulance speed past.

She said she suspected Yogetta was in the vehicle but travelled to Skeldon Hospital, where she was told that the younger woman got a baby girl and was transferred to New Amsterdam Hospital.

In company with her son, they journeyed to New Amsterdam Hospital and proceeded to the Maternity Unit, from where they were directed to the Labour Room before being ushered out and given the bad news by an attending nurse.

The dead woman’s husband said he was disappointed that Skeldon Hospital staff did not notify the family of the transfer although they were provided with telephone numbers.

The man expressed regret that he was unable to speak to his wife before she died, leaving to mourn, as well, a daughter two years old.
