Jamaica and Guyana set for second win today
FRONT runners Jamaica and host nation Guyana are set to make it two wins from as many games when play in Group ‘C’ of the CONCACAF/CFU World Cup Under 20 qualifiers continue at the Providence Stadium this evening.
The Young Reggae Boyz will match skills with the US Virgin Islands in the first match at 17:00h and in the feature game set for 19:00h Guyana will entertain Grenada.
Group favourite Jamaica should have no difficulty in disposing of the USVI who went under 1-5 in their opening game against Guyana while the Jamaicans hammered Grenada 6-1.
The young Islanders might not be as fortunate as they were when Guyana failed to put away the numerous opportunities created as Jamaica seems to be more organized and clinical in their finishing.
Assistant Coach Andrew Edwards told Chronicle Sport that Jamaica was happy for the opening win and look forward to making it two in a row, though scoring plenty goals will not be the objective of tonight’s encounter.
Edwards added that nerves had the better of the players in the opening half, but after the half-time talk they were able to get their composure together and play more relaxed.
Grenadian Coach Kenton Roberts expressed disappointment at the way his side played,” I expected a much better performance, to be honest, based on our preparations I am baffled.
I think nervousness played a great part in the underperformance and more importantly we lost a player and were reduced to ten and that brought about real pressure”.
“It is important for us to win tonight since our aim is to make it to the next round. A few changes and adjustments will be made and I expect a more improved game against Guyana”, Roberts promised.
Roberts agreed that it is hard to bounce back from such a big defeat and admitted that some of the players are down spirited, while others are hopeful of rebounding and securing the victory.
Guyana’s Coach, Gordon Braithwaite is assuring the Nation that another win is guaranteed come tonight, “The game should be a very open game, with them coming at us since they are under pressure coming off of a thrashing.
We must play more organised and we should have no problem in winning.”
The former National defender who also captained and coached the senior Guyana side in the past reflected on Wednesday’s win and told Chronicle Sport, “I am not pleased with the performance. I think the guys were trying too hard, hence we failed to score more goals.
I am also concerned about our organization in defense, especially in the middle. The perfect coordination will come with more playing time. We haven’t been together for a month”, Braithwaite informed.
Coach Braithwaite also hinted that there may be a few changes to the starting line up and that he has a secret weapon waiting to reveal.
