THE Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Agriculture and the Regional Administration in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), has started a massive exercise to desilt clogged sluice channels along the Essequibo Coast shoreline. Regional Chairman, Mr. Alli Baksh yesterday inspected the work being done on the Anna Regina sluice channel by two long boom excavators mounted on a pontoon in the Atlantic Ocean.
He said the undertaking is very important to preparing the Region for the next rainy season and providing better drainage for rice farmers.
Baksh said the pontoon and the long boom excavators were sent from Georgetown to clear the waterways which are silted with ‘sling’ mud.
Other channels at Lima, Hampton Court, Devonshire Castle, Perth, Dartmouth, Westbury, Andrews and Somerset and Berks are also to be desilted.
