A BRUTAL, unbeaten 94 from all-rounder Christopher Barnwell powered hosts Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) to a commanding 44-run victory over Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) in the final of the GCA/Digicel Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Twenty20 first-division competition yesterday.
After the match was reduced to a seven-over affair owing to heavy rain, and tremendous work from the groundstaff in ensuring the match was played, the right-handed Barnwell muscled eleven mighty sixes and five fours as DCC acquired a commanding 125-2 off their 7 overs.
GNIC, in reply, were left struggling at 81-5 when their overs expired.
Barnwell, who was later adjudged man-of-the-match for his robust batting display, returned with the ball to claim two for 18 from his allotted two overs, while left-arm orthodox spinner Totaram Bishun also bagged 2-19 off two overs.
Preceding the championship game was the third-place playoff between Georgetown Cricket Club and Everest with the former emerging with an eight-wicket win under the Duckworth Lewis Method.
At the presentation ceremony, president of the GCA, Roger Harper, an ex-West Indies all-rounder, congratulated the victorious DCC for winning the inaugural competition, while he reserved special praise for the sponsor (Digicel).
DCC collected $150 000 and a trophy, while all the players, along with the coach, received a medal each. GNIC were rewarded with a trophy, medals and $75 000.
GCC took home a trophy and $45 000, while Everest were also in the money with $30 000 and a trophy.
Barnwell was the recipient of a trophy for being the highest run-scorer and also copped the best bowler prize.
