Region Three administration clears the air on Mc Gillivray bridge

– says bridge completed to satisfaction
THE Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) administration has noted with concern, the attempts by a section of the print and electronic media to cast aspersions with regards to the footpath bridge across the main drainage canal leading to the Mc Gillivray Primary School in Canal No 1 Polder, West Bank Demerara.

“We wish to point out that the bridge (an old structure) was deteriorating rapidly. A contract worth $968,338 was awarded through the normal bidding process (and) the contractor was advised to dismantle the bridge in view of the then current state which our technical staff felt was not safe,” explained by Mr. Jaidev Dudhnauth, the Regional Information Officer.

“Indeed and in fact the contractor informed the administration of the difficulty of obtaining greenheart materials,” he said in a statement.

And in doing so, he sought an extension which was approved by the administration, Mr. Dudhnauth further explained.

“Suffice it to say that the shortage of greenheart materials was as a result of heavy rainfall which affected logging operations in various locations,” he added.

Dudhnauth said the said bridge has since been completed to the satisfaction of the regional administration.
