This year Agriculture Month, October, is being held under the theme ‘Fighting Global Hunger through Agricultural Diversification in Guyana’ and Convener of Agriculture Month activities committee, Basudeo Dwarka, said Guyana’s focus is in line with that of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
At a press briefing at the Agriculture Ministry Boardroom yesterday, he explained that the FAO’s focus continues to be food security and as such Guyana, being food secure, will also continue on this path.
FAO’s theme for World Food Day is ‘United against Hunger’.
Importantly, he stressed that the Ministry of Agriculture will be launching its Food Security Strategy for Guyana and an Agriculture Appraisal Seminar will help to address the way forward.
Dwarka noted that the main focus this year will be on livestock, particularly in light of the recent establishment of the Guyana Livestock Development Authority; fruits and vegetables clusters; and aquaculture.
He added too that special recognition will be given to persons who have contributed in a significant way to the advancement of the sector.
According to him, organisations such as the Guyana Forestry Commission and the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), as well as the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) will also be recognized.
Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture, through the Regional Administrations, is also expected to support regional programmes to highlight activities for this month.
