Barnwell, Bishun and Christian put DCC in command
NATIONAL all-rounder and skipper of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) first division team Christopher Barnwell struck a ton, while Totaram Bishun snatched a five-wicket haul and Derwin Christian struck a blazing half-century and DCC took command at the end of the first day of their Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Nero Cup first division match against Transport Sports Club (TSC) yesterday. Playing at the DCC ground in Queenstown, Barnwell struck nine fours and seven sixes, while Cowen Ismond 40 (6×4, 1×6), Denver Greaves 27 (2×4, 2×6) and Leroy Primo 24 (3×4, 1×6) offered support to Barnwell as DCC scored 267 before they were bowled out.
Marc Nicholson took 3-15 while Carl Rambharose and Yogesh Kissoon took two wickets each for 41 and 65 runs respectively for TSC, who were bowled out for 66 from 14 overs by Bishun, who grabbed 7-12 with his left-arm orthodox spin, with only Azim Azeez 15 (3×4) and Nicholson 12 (1×4, 1×6) offering resistance to Bishun.
Opting to bat a second time, DCC reached 251-3 at the close of play, with Christian hitting an unbeaten 80 (9×6; 14), Trevon Griffith 66 (7×4, 3×6) and Ismond an unbeaten 24 (2×4), as DCC enjoyed a healthy 452-run lead with seven wickets intact going into the final day next Sunday.
At the Police Sports Club ground Eve Leary, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) bowled out the home team for 248 from 69.4 overs, of which Shameer Fazal 74, Pernell London 30 and Jason Heyliger 27 were the principal scorers.
Trevon Garraway took three wickets while left-arm spinner Dennis Legay snared two for GDF, who reached 50-2 at the close of play, with discarded national opening batsman Shemroy Barrington hitting an unbeaten 30.
This match will continue today at the same venue, while Malteenoes Sports Club will face the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) at the GDF ground. Action in both matches will commence at 09:30 h.
